Southern Movies for Southern Girls (or GRITS)

There are 2 movies that come to mind when I think of "movies you gotta see if you are a girl raised in the south". Now, I'm not sayin that you wouldn't enjoy these movies had you grown up north of the Mason-Dixon, but there's just something about a movie that depicts women that talk like you. Know what I mean? For those of you who haven't met me, I've got a thick southern accent. AND.PROUD.OF.IT. A friend of mine moved here from South Florida a couple of years ago. (For those of you who don't know, most (but not all) people from southern Florida do not have the typical southern accent, they just don't) She told me recently that her biggest fear when she moved here was picking up a thick southern accent (she hasn't yet). I said "What? Are you kidding? My biggest fear is that one day Hubs company will move us up North and I'll lose mine." I guess everyone doesn't see it that way. Oh well, back to the movies.

Shag the movie - This movie is a must see! It actually came out in 1989 and quickly became a Southern Favorite. I remember watching it and wishing I lived during that time. It is set during the 60's and stars Phoebe Cates as Carson who is engaged to boring Harley Rosson. Her best friends Melaina (Bridget Fonda), Pudge (Annabeth Gish), and Luanne (Page Hannah) whisk her away for one last fling. A bad boy named Buzz makes Carson rethink her wedding plans. The best part is the clothes, the setting, and the one-liners. Clemson Girl talked about this movie on her blog recently. I didn't realize there were so many people who love it!

Steel Magnolias - Julia before she was a $20 million dollar a picture actress. I like her in the movie, but the best actress in the movie is Sally Field. She made me cry! From the accents, the red velvet Armadillo cake at Shelbys wedding (how many southern girls do I know named Shelby, like 100, seriously), to Dolly Partons One liners, this movie is to die for. I could watch a thousand times and not get tired of it. Came out in 1989.

Movies that aren't so southern but still good -
Best movie of all time (in my humble opinion)? When Harry Met Sally. Who doesn't love this movie? I heart Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan. I love the story of friendship and ultimately love. And marrying your best friend? Priceless! Oh and seriously, it came out in 1989 as well. Was that a good year for movies or what?

You've Got Mail - Meg Ryan. Tom Hanks. Enough said. Good from beginning to end.

What are your favorite girly movies???

I grew up in Oklahoma, speaking with a thick Southern drawl. We moved to the Chicago suburbs when I was 12 and all the kids made fun of my accent! It was terrible! So, I lost the accent. But, even now, every now and then, when I get to talking about something and I'm really excited, a little twang will slip out.

LOVE Steel Magnolias. Today at work, someone had an old 80's CD on in the OR. We were all flashing back to Flashdance! I loved that movie!

I loved the movie "Shag" - saw it in the theaters when I was a teenager. It had the "dance scene" too & I'm a sucker for any movies that people dance in!

Another great southern accent movie - "Sweet Home Alabama"! Love at the end when her twang is back! Being a Kentucky girl - I love a twang!

could watch Steel Magnolias every day. It is my "go to" movie. If I had a daughter, she would have been Shelby.

You know, T is a yankee, and is it killing him that the boys say "ya'll"

I would have to put Footloose on the list.

You want to run with me on the 11th of October in Bham for Breast Cancer? I need someone to say the will be there, so I will actually do it.

I love 'Shag' too. I live in AZ now and hardly anyone has heard of it (what a shame). And I love 'Steel Magnolias'. I even made 'cuppa, cuppa, cuppa' once (1 cup of sugar, 1 cup of flour, 1 cup of fruit cocktail with the juice and bake till it's bubbly) - it wasn't bad :)

I like 'Sweet Home Alabama' as kind of a 'new' southern movie.

LOVE LOVE LOVE Steel Magnolias. LOVE IT. I also liked 9-5 the movie with Dolly Parton. :) Don't remember too many other girly movies, but loved Ferris Bueller's Day Off! :) 16 Candles, too. I love the 80's movies
